World Environment Day 2019

United Nations World Environment Day 2019 urged governments, industry, communities, and individuals to come together to explore renewable energy and green technologies, and improve air quality in cities and regions across the world. "Air Pollution", the theme of the celebration is a call to action for everyone to come together to combat one of the great environmental challenges of our time - making changes in our everyday lives to reduce the heavy burden of plastic pollution on our natural places, our wildlife – and our own health.

Teenage development for Africa (Teen Africa) in collaboration with My Green Africa Community (MGC) carried out a school based awareness campaign on the 2019 World Environment Day at Community Secondary School, Ndiagu-Amaechi Awkunanaw, Enugu State of Nigeria on 7th June, 2019. The campaign event whose topic was on "Curbing Environmental Pollution and promoting greener environment: the role of teenagers" enlightened the students on their responsibility towards establishing and sustaining a cleaner, greener environment within their homes and communities.

In response, the principal of the school, Mrs. Roseline Etiko commented in her response, enjoined her students to stop littering the environment and minimize the use of non-biodegradable products like nylon when making purchases from food vendors and to leverage on the knowledge acquired from the enlightenment campaign by practicing what they learnt and passing on the knowledge to their school mates in other classes, schools and at home.  As part of the events, five (5) trees were planted in the school in commemoration of the World Environment Day, 2019. The participating students, who were drawn from the junior secondary section of the school, were divided into 5 groups. Each group was given a tree to plant, along with the task of monitoring, watering and ensuring that the plants survived until later in the year when the organizers planned to visit the school to observe the welfare of the trees and give out awards to the group with the best nurtured and well-kept tree.
